Chasing Yesterday

From the Vinyl Soup compact disc, Chasing Yesterday

Deep south beneath the forest green
Lived a lonely man named Sonny B
Hunched back a limp and hair to the knee
With a leather sack full of hopes and dreams

Far away where desert meets the sea
A world of fame milk and honey
Longing for the day to live fully free
In a world of wine and make believe

The day came to full-fill the deed
With a carry on a pipe in hand and the million miles that lead
Chasing the sun and the orange glow it feeds
Fleeing from his horrid past he bleeds

Run Sonny now run
Your living the life but soon you’ll be done
Consumed by the moments of yesterday
Even though there all gone
Run Sonny now run
The clock echoes second hand clicks like a gun
With the world crashing in like a wave on the sands skin
And your life is a ripple in the tide

Traveling a road to a city unknown
Appears a demon in the dark winding road
Looking down at Sonny shaking all alone
“I am the voice that ticks inside your bones”

Frightened by the voice of time in his sight
Sonny grabs his bags and runs in a flight
As he leaves the demon hands him a clock
“Hurry before the world completely stops”

Sweating as he stumbled through rock hills and trees
Startled with a vision of heaven in his eyes he falls to his knees
As a voice creeps in his head he looks to the clock to see
Stiff in his tracks the world begins RUMBLING!

30 miles left to heavens gate
Deep down inside he knows he’ll be late
Off in the distance behind a grassy hill
Beams a ray of light and a noise begins to build

Reaching a gate to a world he longs for
Stands a guard weighing ten tons or more
Holding a clock that has long reached the end
The guard states “I cannot let you in”

Sonny stepped into yesterday
Living by the book he thought he knew the way
A world of regret buried in his brain
And he burns the seed of life to kill the pain
